Keywords: Coastal, Ocean, Reanalysis, Modeled Water Levels, Modeled Waves, High-Resolution, Gridded Data, Community Modeling Summary: NOAA’s Coastal Ocean ReAnalysis (CORA) couples long-term water level observations with hydrodynamic modeling to create historical information between tide stations. CORA water levels are simulated with the ocean circulation model ADvanced CIRCulation (ADCIRC) coupled with the phase-averaging Simulating WAves Nearshore (SWAN) model to produce surface gravity wave spectra and account for time-averaged wave contributions. Coastal water level observations from the NOAA’s National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON) are low-pass filtered and assimilated into the model to account for long-term sea level variability and reduce model errors. As of September, 2026, domains include the U.S. East and Gulf coasts (CORA-GEC) and the U.S. West coast, Hawaii, and southern Alaska (CORA-PAC). The time period of the reanalysis is 1979-2022 (inclusive) for the GEC and 1979-2025 (inclusive) for the PAC, with each year modeled independently. Acknowledgment: NOAA’s Coastal Ocean Reanalysis wouldn’t be possible without the expertise, guidance, computing resources, and support provided by the Renaissance Computing Institute (RENCI) at the University of North Carolina. Technical assistance and model validation were provided by experts at the University of Hawaii’s Sea Level Center. Observations from NOAA’s National Water Level Observation Network (NWLON) are at the foundation of CORA datasets. Special thanks to our partners at Tetra Tech for data management and cloud-based product development including optimization, interpolation, generation of derived products for the 500 m grid, and visualization. Additional thanks to NOAA’s Center for Operational Oceanographic Products and Services (CO-OPS), NOAA’s Office of Coastal Management (OCM), NOAA’s Integrated Ocean Observing System (IOOS), NOAA’s Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO), and the NOAA Open Data Dissemination (NODD) team for their contributions to the development and dissemination of CORA. Comment: CORA >= v1.1.1 is the only dataset suitable for research and application. All previous datasets (e.g. v0.9 and v1.0) should be considered prototype only and are not suitable for research and application. See the Change Log for more info.
